Mahagenco’s Shivajinagar Sakari Solar Power Plant this is the largest of its kind in India and also one of the largest in the world. The plant supplies clean energy to 240,000 homes in Maharashtra, which translates into a reduction in CO2 emissions equivalent to taking 40,000 cars off the road per year. The total project covers an area of approximately 400 hectares of waste land that is not suitable for agricultural use.
The Indian government has strongly encouraged the development of the solar energy sector in India by launching the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). With this in mind, Maharashtra Power Generation Corporation Ltd. (Mahagenco’s) has completed the construction of a 125 MW solar photovoltaic power plant at Shivajinagar, Sakari, in the Dhule district of Maharashtra. KFW supported this project in the form of concessional financing on behalf of the German government and the total capacity of 125 MW has been in operation since March 2013.
At the time of signing the loan, there was only limited experience with solar PV in India, with a total of only a few MW of large-scale installations. The financial closure of such a massive project at that time was a significant step forward in motivating domestic commercial financing for the Indian solar sector. At the time of the tender, the project revealed a cost per watt of solar energy “the best in the country”,
The project was built by a multitude of mainly India-based contractors and subcontractors and therefore presented a great opportunity to further develop the growing solar energy industry in the country. Different photovoltaic technologies and materials are used for the generation of solar energy, which allows a local and long-term experience of these different technologies in a climate with abundant sunshine and consequently high ambient temperatures.
KFW has also accepted grants for technical assistance measures on behalf of the German government. This technical assistance to ensure high quality in technical, business and procedural areas and thus has been an excellent catalyst for the establishment of a benchmark solar power plant for the Indian energy sector. On the other hand, from parallel site analyzes funded by KFW on behalf of the German government and adequate under the Maharashtra Valley cluster initiative help to identify other highly promising solar sites in the Maharashtra.
